The square, between 1910 and 1929

The Bibliothèque nationale de France holds, within the Société de Géographie collection, an album of forty views of Oran. Plate 140 carries the printed caption “La Poste et la Place de la Bastille”. It shows the garden square, its palms and its basin, the main post office beyond — and, along the entire left edge of the frame, the façade of the Grand Hôtel.

It is the same square. It changed name in 1962; the hotel has kept the same address.

The same arch

One century, one entrance

On the left, the entrance in the 1920s: a fan-shaped canopy of iron and glass, spreading far over the pavement. On the right, the same archway today. The present canopy is a different structure, smaller and flatter — but the round arch, its voussoirs and its line are those of 1920.

Timeline

What the house has been through

  1. 1920
The building is completed. Five floors, a neo-classical stone façade, mascarons and ironwork. A period postcard bears the line “S. Ch. Holl, arch.”. Date corroborated by six sources, including the hotel’s own crest.
  2. 1960s–1970s
The salons host meetings of Oran’s academic and associative circles. From these gatherings the Emir Abdelkader Foundation will emerge. Reported by the local press; the founding date remains to be confirmed.
  3. 2010
Closure, following non-renewal of the operating licence. Ten years of vacancy will follow. Corroborated; sources differ on the month (June or July).
  4. 2020
The restoration works begin, conducted so as to preserve the original architecture and ornamentation. One source places the effective start of works in August 2021.
  5. 24 May 2025
Official inauguration, in the presence of the Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts. The hotel is rated four stars: 82 rooms, 14 suites, 5 connecting rooms, 132 beds across five floors. National press, May 2025.

A day here

The rhythm of the house

  • 12 am The front desk does not close. An arrival at three in the morning is an arrival like any other.
  • 12 pm La Bastille opens for lunch. The room serves until three.
  • 3 pm The hall empties. It is the best moment to look at the skylight: the sun stands directly above the glass.
  • 7 pm Dinner begins. The square lights up, and the gilded letters on the façade with it.
  • 11 pm The restaurant closes. The front desk does not.
